Sperical Coordinate System

Definition

1

The coordinates of a point pp in coordinate space are represented by “the distance rr between the origin and pp,” “the angle θ\theta between the line connecting the origin and pp and the positive direction of the zz-axis,” and “the angle ϕ\phi between the projection of the line connecting the origin and pp on the xyxy-plane and the positive direction of the xx-axis.” This is called the spherical coordinate system.

Explanation

The set of points for a fixed rr forms a sphere. Therefore, the distance from the origin is denoted as rr, following the initial of radius. It is also referred to as the (r,θ,ϕ)(r, \theta, \phi)-coordinate system.
