Distinguishing Between W and Omega in Mathematics and Physics Textbooks
Description
When reading textbooks on physics and mathematics, it can be confusing to tell whether a symbol is omega or double-u. For sophomores who have just started studying their major subjects, some might not even be aware of omega and think it’s always double-u. In physics, it’s most likely omega when you encounter it as a symbol for angular frequency.
Personally, I feel like double-u is used more frequently in mathematics.
Omega has both ends of its top part curled inward, resembling dumplings. There is a noticeable difference in height. On the other hand, the left end of the top part of a double-u curls outward, and there is barely any height difference. If you look closely, you can see that their shapes are different. Below is an example from an actual book.
