In dynamical systems, especially in open systems, a tipping that occurs when the system cannot keep up with a rapid change and a transition takes place is called rate-induced tipping, or simply R-tipping.

The above illustration depicts a situation in which the system has not been fundamentally altered, but the location of a stable equilibrium shifts, and the system’s state cannot keep pace with that rate of change and therefore fails to remain inside the attractor2.
